Raising Funds to support research and Patient Support Services

to benefit UPMC hillman cancer Center

Lung cancer claims more women’s lives than breast, uterine, and cervical cancers combined. Alarmingly, while lung cancer rates are declining in other populations, the number of cases in younger (under 50) non-smoking women has been on the rise. Unfortunately, research funding doesn’t adequately reflect this reality. Funding for other cancers far outpaces that for lung cancer, even though all it takes for anyone to be at risk for lung cancer is having lungs.

Dr. Stabile’s work is focused on the role of growth factors and hormones in non-small cell lung cancer development. Her laboratory seeks to examine the link between inflammation and estrogen signaling, identify dietary factors that modify risk, and develop novel therapies and prevention strategies for current lung cancer patients.

Prior to Elizabeth’s passing on July 3, 2023, she and Sven had a heartfelt conversation about the desire to expand Libby’s Lungs by introducing a component aimed at assisting patients with various needs, including transportation, parking, meal support, and other essential services.

The majority of funds contributed to Libby’s Lungs, specifically 80%, will support Dr. Stabile’s research, while the remaining 20% of funds will be allocated to assist with patient support services.
